Legal 500 Recognizes O+Z as a Leading Copyright Firm for 2025

Washington, D.C. (July 9, 2025) —Citing testimonials that described the firm as “among the best of the best copyright litigation firms,” independent rankings agency Legal 500 has recognized Oppenheim + Zebrak, LLP (O+Z) as a leading U.S. copyright firm for 2025.

In evaluating O+Z, Legal 500 stated that the firm “utilizes the bench strength of its Washington DC and New York-based IP practices to represent major internet, technology, and music clients, including Macmillan Learning, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Penguin Random House in high-value copyright and infringement cases.”

In addition to calling O+Z “among the best of the best copyright litigation firms,” Legal 500 testimonials also described the firm as having the “highest level of expertise in copyright litigation” and a “deep bench” of “experienced and polished trial lawyers,” who are “both smart and strategic.”

Legal 500 singled out several partners for their unique skillsets, noting that Co-Founding Partner Scott Zebrak “utilizes his longstanding litigation and counselling experience to handle content protection matters involving digital media, new tech, and disruptive business models.” Managing Partner Matt Oppenheim was described by Legal 500 “as a premier litigator regarding complex disputes for technology, copyright, and trademark cases.”

The rankings agency also noted that Partner Alex Kaplan is “a seasoned courtroom lawyer, [who] excels in litigating high-stakes cases with particular focus on the music industry,” and that Partner Michele Harrington Murphy “brings substantial experience as a litigator in complex civil cases representing publishers and record companies.” Additionally, Partner Jeff Gould “is well versed in all phases of litigation from pre-suit through trial and appeal, primarily working with clients in the music industry,” Legal 500 stated.

In particular, Legal 500 cited the firm’s representation of book publishers against Google in a case alleging the search giant has engaged in systematic and pervasive advertising and promotion of known pirated content sold on pirate websites. The rankings agency also cited the firm’s involvement in a suit on behalf of major music companies against Verizon for contributory and vicarious copyright infringement of copyrighted songs.
